The Art of Rapidfire. Make or break.

Rapidfire has been questioned since the beginning of the Ogame world, so I'm going to try to stop that.

Rapidfire means what it says on the tin, that a ship will fire more than once in a round, but when and why?

The answer... Example: If ship A has Rapidfire of 5 against ship B, and ship A manages to hit and destroy ship B, ship A has an 80% chance that it will fire again. If, on the second shot, ship A hits and destroys another ship of the same type as ship B again, it has 80% chance of firing again, and so on...

The percentage chance of ship A firing again can be worked out by finding out what rapidfire it has against ship B (in this case 5), dividing 100 by it (100/5=20), and then taking the result away from 100 (100-20=80% chance). The number of Rapidfire that ship A has against ship B is the average of how many ship B's ship A destroys per round.

So, again, Ship A has Rapidfire of 5 against Ship B. Ship A hits and destroys a Ship B. Ship A gets an 80% chance of firing again, so 4 out of 5 times, Ship A will fire again. So if the computer calculates a number between 0 and 100, if the number is below 80, then Ship A will fire again, if its above, it must wait until the next round to fire again.

But remember, a ship could have 99% chance to fire again but not even once more, so don't assume you'll actually destroy that many.

The Rapid Fire allows a ship to shot more than one time in a every single round.

This is a chance that depends on a percentage: every ship in OGame choses its target randomly; if the ship hits a target it has RF against, it will start like a dice roll that will eventually make the ship to fire again in that same round.

Even the following targets will be chosen randomly, and if the ship hits again a target with RF against, will start another roll and so on. If it hits a target without RF against, the ship will stop and the round will end.
What that is relevant is the kind of the target: It doesn't matter if the hit unit is always the same or always a new one.


In short the RF is the amount of probability a ship has to fire again if a certain target is hit.




There is no limit of how many times a ship can shot, but you can have a very realistic idea of what will happen looking at the chance of fire again.
The percentage a ship has to fire again is given by the amount of RF:
In the description of each ship if it has rapid fire, it will be followed by a kind of ship and a number.
You can find out the percentage of chance a ship has to fire again with this formula:

1-1/RF

or, same thing:

100-100/RF






Keep in mind:

- it does not matter whether the target is destroyed or not: the only relevant thing is what kind of target is hit.
- the target is always chosen randomly between all the available ones, of all the kinds.
- as a general rule of the combat system, the amount of damage a ship got is calculated after the round is ended, and only when the round is ended the ship is removed from the battle. That's why in a single round 1000 Battleships can fire all against a single Light Fighter, substantially wasting their fire. In the same way, the RF can chose the same ship again and again, as the destroyed target is removed only when the round is ended.




Now, the most important thing: the number of the RF does not means in any way the average number of target destroyed.

If you say a Battleship has RF 5 against Espionage Probes, this does not mean it is going to kill an average of 5 probes.

I'll explain this with an example:

Battleship has RF 5 against probe. With the formula we know if the fighter shot a probe it has the 80% of chance of firing again.

So we have our Battleship VS these 5 probes:

Let's see every single shot of the Battleship one by one:


1) 100% chance to hit a probe: probe a destroyed.

2) now it has 80% chance to fire again. It does. But now it has only a 4/5 to get another probe. So to destroy another probe it need 2 conditions to be verified: first, it has to fire again, second, it has not to hit probe a. Chance of getting another probe is 80%. So the chance of actually destroy another probe is the 80% of the 80%, this mean the 64% of chance to destroy 2 probes.

3) it fires at b, now it has again 80% of chance of firing again, but only 3/5 (60%) of getting a new probe. To destroy the third probe it need to be verified: 80% of shoting again after already had shot again, so 80% of another 80%. The target chosen at the second hit its not relevant to calculate if the ship will fire a third time. Battleship has 64% of chance to fire again. But to destroy 3 probes, it need to be verified even the other variable: only the 60% of the shot at the probes will tear down a third one, so the chance is the 60% of the 64% ---> 38% of chance for a fighter to destroy 3 probes.

4) Now to shot again it need to be: 80% of the 80% of the 80% ---> 51% (percentage of the chance of a fighter to shot 4 times). If it is quite likely for a Battleship to shot 4 times, we have to think that now to destroy another probe it has to hit either d or e: 40%
So to shot a fourth probe it need to happen that 51%, and inside this, that other 40% ---> 20% of the total. A Battleship has 20% of chance to take out 4 probes.

5) Now let's get probe e: to shot for the 5th times it needs to happen 4 times the 80%, one in the other, so the total chance is: 40%. In this percentage, it need to be verified the 20% of hitting probe e. 8% the final chance of destroying 5 probes.



Conclusion: in my theory a Battleship against 5 probes has only the 8% chance of destroying them all. So the RF 5 does not mean the average number of the destroyed ship.

Demonstration:

1) logical: if you have to shot 5 times without choosing the target, and you have 5 target, what make you think you are going to hit them all?

2) speedsim: try to simulate a Battleship against 5 probes. Does it ever win in one round?
In all the simulation I made it takes 2 rounds and the Battleship has to shot an average of 8 times to win. The chance of winning in one single round is so low (8%) that is not showed in Speedsim, as it makes 100 simulation and then it calculates the average result.



A Battleship against 30 probes:
If you use Speedsim you see the chance to win for the BS are about 18%
This is more bs-friendly, because as there are a lot of target, in the first rounds is hard to get the same (already destroyed) probe.
If the RF 5 meant a Battleship kills an average of 5 probes per rounds, the chance to win should be around 50%, but they are not.
